I Watched Every Episode of the Gilmore Girls At A Porn Store

Gilmore Girls (WB) Season 1, 2000-2001 Episode: Love and War and Snow Airdate: December 14, 2000 Shown from left: Alexis Bledel (as Rory Gilmore), Lauren Graham (as Lorelai Gilmore)

For two years I managed a struggling porn store. It was located in NE DC and Mayor Marion Barry frequented it from time to time. It was not a classy joint.

I worked the day shift Monday to Friday. There was good and bad to it. The bad: people who like to hang out in porn stores during the day are not exactly pillars of the community. Many just wanted free stuff. I got into heated altercations more than once, based on the fact that I could not refund used lubricant.

The good of this job was having a ton of time on my hands. I wrote and read a ton at the porn store. It was the ideal job for an aspiring author. There was a TV there as well, to check if videos were ‘really scratched’ but I never did. Instead I used the TV for background and kept ESPN on because the customers liked to talk sports, but from 3:00 to 4:00 PM I’d take a writing break and watch the Gilmore Girls on ABC Family.

By fate or coincidence I stumbled onto the pilot episode one glorious afternoon and I was instantly hooked. Would Lorelai finally end up with grumpy guy at the Diner? Would Rory finally find a boyfriend who could balance her out and giver he love? Don’t get me started on Jess versus Dean! I am team Jess all the way.

Watching Gilmore Girls became a ritual and even the perv regulars got involved. We all rejoiced when Lorelai finally got with Luke. The porn patrons were even touched by them finally coming together, but the ending left me and many others unsatisfied.

I think there was more to this show than just entertainment. Working at a porn store 40 hours a week can get disenchanting and depressing. You see people who aren’t bad but you wouldn’t want to spilt a sandwich with them and talk for thirty minutes at Panera with them either.

The Gilmore Girls kept me company and gave me a much-needed break from the nihilistic porn store squalor. Stories and characters at their best make you feel less alone. Stars Hollow was a great place to go visit while sitting in a porn store.
